Unlike previous years, this year’s ceremony will not feature a host. Instead, various actors will present different segments of the show. Presenters include Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Michelle Yeoh, Don Cheadle, Emily Blunt, Michelle Williams, and Paul Mescal, among others. Antonia Gentry and Haley Lu Richardson will serve as the ambassadors for the ceremony and will present on the show, in addition to providing viewers with exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the event on social media.
The SAG Awards are an acting-specific ceremony, with no awards given to directors, cinematographers, or writers. The most critical award category at the event is Outstanding Performance by a Cast, often regarded as the SAG’s version of the Best Picture award. The winners of this ensemble award typically align with the Oscars. Only four films in history have won the Best Picture Oscar without winning the Ensemble SAG Award: Braveheart, The Shape of Water, Green Book, and Nomadland.
Winning a SAG Award is an excellent predictor of Oscar success, as the winners of the four major film categories – leading and supporting actor and actress – often win the Academy Awards for the same role. Over the past three decades, SAG Award winners have gone on to win Academy Awards eight times.
In terms of nominations, Cate Blanchett is expected to win Best Actress for her mesmerizing performance in Tár, although she faces stiff competition from Michelle Yeoh. Angela Bassett and Ke Huy Quan are favorites to win Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively, but there are other strong contenders in the Best Actor category, including Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, and Austin Butler, who won BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.
